8th grade math teacher here. Algebra is anytime you are working with variables, like:
Solve for x, when x + 5 = 7
This can start in 6th grade and it is revisted in every other math class you take for the rest of your funtastic life as a student of math.
Answer by Susana GIm taking Algebra in 8th grade now too =DAnswer by Conner D
I started it in 8th but that could just be my school. I’ve heard of it starting at grade 9.Answer by dolphinlover
I don’t know about other places, but here in my area it’s Algebra 1 in 8th grade, Geometry in 9th grade, and Algebra 2 in 10th grade, and then Pre-Calculus in 11th, then Calculus in 12th.
I’m 9th grade now and i’m in Honors Geometry in my school, and it requires some knowledge of Algebra 1. So, i don’t know if this applies to every school, but that’s the way it is in my school and every other school in my city. 🙂
Answer by mathmomAlgebraic thinking and concepts are now introduced to many children as early as elementary school. The formal study of algebra (with slope, simultaneous equations, quadratics, factoring, FOILing) can begin as early as grade 6, depending on the curriculum, school district, and of course the student’s math skill level. The basic algebra I course is a 9th grade course, but many kids start it in middle school. In my district, we’ve started a two year algebra course beginning in grade 7, so the students start algebra II in grade 9. There are a few very advanced kids who begin the two year algebra program in grade 6. Those who don’t take the middle school two year programs take algebra I in one year, grade 9. In our district, most kids take geometry in grade 10, although some take it in grade 8.
