Nimwho: Why was I denied for the Citi mtvU card for “insufficient credit history?”?
Hey, I’m a college student, with what I thought was fairly good credit based on my age (I’m 21). I have two credit cards right now: a 5 month old $ 300 Orchard Bank secured card and a 3 month old $ 800 unsecured Wells Fargo College card.
The mtvU card is marketed toward college students, so why would they deny me on the basis of “insufficient credit history?” How much of a credit history do they expect me to have if I’m in college? This doesn’t make any sense.
I’m building my credit so that my dad won’t have to co-sign for me when I need to get a car loan.

That is not much credit history. Keep the two cards you have and make on-time payments for at least one year. In your position, more cards do not necessarily mean better credit.
Obviously, the credit you *do* have is not sufficient at this time for them to approve you. Just because their card is geared towards college students doesn’t mean they owe every student who applies a card!
Also, even IF you have 10 credit cards, I can almost guarantee you will still need a cosigner when you go to buy a car. My daughter had credit for 3 years and a score over 700 and still needed me to cosign.
