Now, I agree that most governments could spend their revenue a bit more wisely, but without forking them over a bit of money, the population would receive less benefits. For example, the roads would be in worse condition, the schools would be less effective, and healthcare would be shoddy.
It seems like no one has come to this realization and that they just blindly prevail minimal (or non-existent) taxation.
And don’t say that taxation hurts the economy, because only very heavy taxes discourage consumption.

because it would be SOOOO much better if we were uneducated, had nobody to protect us from fires and criminals, and had to drive around on streets and highways covered in potholes and cracks!

I live in Texas where taxes are considered small compared to the rest of the United States.

Still the existence of the “small” taxes I have to pay was the REASON I quit my second job. After seeing the amount of extra tax I had to pay with my second salary it was just not worth it to work my ass off when I get soaked for doing it.

Just an example of how taxes do HURT.

Because the government cannot and will not ever restrict their spending–the more revenue they get, the more they spend. Stimulus ring a bell? It was nothing but political payoffs. As is every earmark that goes into a bill that has nothing to do with it. That goes for both the Rs and the Ds in Congress. And okay…I won’t say it hurts the economy because of what you said–but it does hurt the economy. Redistribution of wealth does not enrich the middle class or the poor. Has no one learned from Jimmy Carter?

Because if we are dumb about this stuff, then we look like a jackass…We can’t even see the real motive of taxes because of the crack highways, low maintenance of it, criminals are everywhere and we can’t say that we are safe.

Yea we like all those things why does almost half the nation pay no taxes?
A flat tax system is what we need.

Americans have historically been averse to taxation. However, I believe the very low opinion that Americans currently (and rightfully) have of their government explains much of their reluctance.
