Pocket Protecktor: Why do people think it’s “O.K.” to judge a person’s entire character based on their “Credit Score”?
(I mean…I personally know a lot of people with a high credit score who have a lousy character, and are incompetent at their jobs, so why would a company use somebody’s credit score to determine their employability? Doesn’t it seem “self-defeating” for a society to prevent people from being employed if “being hired by a company” would be the best way they could improve their credit score? Does anybody else besides me see the Catch-22 ridiculousness of this “character-judging” policy?
Also: Not everybody’s credit score is low because of they had bad character and were irresponsible. Lots of things in life beyond their control could cause somebody to have a low credit score, and if they lower a person’s credit score because they never went into debt by using credit cards, isn’t that punishing people for having such a good character that they were responsible enough to prevent themselves from acquiring debt?
I know “why they do it,” folks.
What I’m asking is:
Why do they think a low credit score has anything to do with “taking bribes” or “stealing” or whatever?
Does the credit score system do what the designers of it say it does?
I don’t think so, because that policy results in just as many “wrong” judgements about people as it does “right” ones, so as a “General Indicator of a Person’s Reliability & Character,” it’s no better than guessing.

u can NEVER EVER judge sn by just one point
If you are looking at a job in public service (law enforecement mainly) they do this because they think your are more liable to accept money or bribes. Other companies think they are protecting themselves from unfounded lawsuits, theft, embezzlement, and other shennanigans. This can be unfair, especially in times like this when a lot of people are having financial difficulties, but then again it’s not that hard to maintain a decent credit score if you manage your money right.
Edit: To answer your question about why they think a low credit score will lead to a bad employee, it’s the same reason why they do criminal background checks. Because they think that a a person’s history will give them an idea of what this person is currently like. A company is always going to look out for it’s best interest first and foremost. When people are trying to make money your personal feelings on the matter are totally irrelevant, and that’s the reality of the situation.

~~~ Ignorance and vanity!
Answer by Manifest DensityI don’t think anyone judges someones ENTIRE character based on it. No on is assuming someone else is adventurous and was disappointed by the ending in sopranos based on their credit score.
GENERALLY speaking people that have a low credit score ARE irresponsible with money. If there was a circumstance beyond their control but they are responsible then they can build it back up.
If you don’t have a credit card then that means your unfamiliar with debt so they don’t know how you’ll handle it. It doesn’t mean you have bad credit it means you have no credit.
Seriously, if you were renting out a swanky multi million dollar condo your not gunna do a credit check on an applicant to see if he even has the money and is responsible enough to pay you?
It’s nice to see you!
Some people base their judgments on even less-important things.
While I can understand why the lending community places a high value on someone’s “credit score” – in and of itself it’s already skewed and needs re-evaluating.
To base a personal evaluaton of someone’s character on this is foolish. (I’m being polite) It is a foolhardy and stoooopid as basing the same evaluation on skin color or religious belief.
So much! goes into making up a person’s character.
As you point out, “stuff happens”; not all of it within our control.
EDIT:
(You added that last “detail” while I was typing.)
I never! have heard of anyone equating a
CREDIT SCORE with anything even remotely
approaching “stealing” and or “bribe-taking”!
That’s waaaay beyond merely stupid.
A good credit score bespeaks a friendly attitude
(which I don’t have and therefore imagine mine is somewhere in the minuses) toward the use of credit
and a mature response to their responsibilities in paying
it back.
Period.
The most heartening news I’ve read in a long time came today.
It said that the use of credit has dropped dramatically.
I find that very encouraging.
Probably the Banks don’t see it that way. Bummer.
They do it because it is a very simple and easy way to judge someone.
Is it wrong? Yes.
Is it partly ineffective? Yes.
Is most the stuff people in positions of power do wrong and ineffective? Yes.
Answer by phil8656What’s really funny is that they judge you even you don’t have any credit, good or bad.
Credit is the mark of the beast. You can’t live without it.
