Arthur T: why do customers at McDonald’s or fastfood restaurants need to throw their own trash in the bin?
when did this rule start? I know that McDonald’s in some countires, the customers don’t have to clean their own mess, and have clerks to do it for them.
I know most people do it, I’m just wondering when was this rule established? and why people do it naturally. I know in some countries they have clerks to clean customers mess up. what would happen if a foreigner doesn’t know it and just leaves his garbage on the table. is that considered bad behavior or breaking the rules?

It keeps the prices down..If they don’t have to pay to have people clean up after the customers, they don’t have to charge as much.
It helps with the “get in get out” attitude, like the bright lights and cold decorating. Once you throw your stuff away, you don’t want to stay.Answer by hartinbabe
Is it hard?
Jeez…. What a laziness motivated question!

It’s fast food. All they are responsible for is getting you food fast. You do the rest. They don’t have time or personnel to stop and clean up after you. Is it so hard to do? They are usually by the door. Just pick up your tray and dump the mess on your way out. If you want someone to clean up after you, go to an actual restaurant!Answer by joe c
Guys, realize that customs change from country to country, and that it doesn’t mean someone is lazy. There was no rule established, that’s just what people started doing when fast-food restaurants set-up shop. Because many of our fast food joints do such high-volume, the trash would otherwise collect too quickly, and there wouldn’t be any employees to clear it in a rush. If you left your stuff because you weren’t aware of our custom, an employee would clean it up eventually, and maybe probably grumble about it. If you’re in an unfamiliar culture and you’re unsure about what the custom is, look to see what others are doing, or you can even ask someone. People are generally pretty forgiving if you’re ‘not from around here’, but as i’m sure you feel about foreign people in your native area, you’d like them to make an effort to follow suit.Answer by joe-dee
I just do it because I don’t want the help to feel so degraded.
The negative thought being “Clean up my mess, you loathy one” It would feel uncomfortable leaving left over garbage.Answer by aunt_webby

Answer by fang58000It keeps costs down. Since there is no server or attendant to come to your table to give you food. It is only polite to clean up your own food. It is not a rule that you have to do it, but you will get some rude looks and stares if you don’t.Answer by keepitsimple
i dont know if it is a rule it is just helpful keeps it cheap and nice for the help who are already underpaidAnswer by craziechix01
The prices are cheap compared to a casual restaurant where one has to order food from a menu, is served by the waitress/waiter, and then pay the bill later. In a fast food setting one buys their meal and it is given to them within a couple of minutes and there are trash bins available while in casual restaurants the food arrives in 15-30 and there isn’t a trash bin in sight only in the kitchens.
So in order words in fast food restaurants you choose were to sit and you practically serve yourself.
Answer by reelcari’ve never been to a fastfood joint and seen a sign saying put your trash in the bin. for how rude everyone is these days it kinda odd that they are so nice at the places making them fat. i’ve left my crap on the tabe a couple of times when i had a bad experience at the restaurant that dayAnswer by Havas nana
I do not think it is a rule, people leave their messes all the time and nobody calls the cops. It is a common courtesy ,all people should do it.Answer by ConfusedGuy
