Stacy O: Who is eligible for the tax rebate check?
I am currently a student in college, but I work during breaks from school (summer and Christmas breaks). I get pretty much all my taxes back, but my parents claim me as a dependent on their taxes. Will I still get the tax rebate check because I am single and a tax payer?

No, dependents aren’t eligible. Sorry. If you owe any tax for 2008 though, you’ll get the benefit next year of a tax cut.
If your parents claim you as a dependent, you will be ineligible for the rebate, but you may still benefit under the plan.
While the rebate depends on your 2007 status and income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, taxes would be cut in 2008 from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $ 6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.
So if you have taxable income in 2008, you will see a tax cut when you file in 2009.

The conditions for the tax rebate are:
– Not claimed as a dependent by someone else
– Have at least $ 3000 in wages, railroad or Social Security pensions
– File a tax return
