jack sparrow: When did the NYSE start trading on wednesdays?
I used to work for old er folks in the early 1990’s and we talked stocks. He mentioned that the NYSE used to be closed on Wednesdays to count the stock transactions before computers. I have looked around on the net and really can’t find anything about the market being closed on Wednesdays!
Was this really true, and my boss was pulling my leg? or it was but it’s considered insignificant history? if so, when did this happen?
Thanks.

I hear that it started in the 1970’s
As far as I know it always traded on Wednesdays. The NYSE web site has “a timeline of changes in the New York Stock Exchange’s trading hours since the NYSE’s continuous auction market was developed in 1871.” That timeline does not show Wednesday being different than any other weekday during that time.
