Just a friend…: What’s the deal with bells and the stock market?
I know barely anything about the “stock market”, but when those words come to mind I think of two things : bells ringing and people clapping. Can someone please tell me where that comes into play?

These customs hearken back to the initial days of the market when there were no means of mass notification of the market open and close times, other than a very loud bell. It’s still in use today. Those who have the honor of “ringing the bell” are being honored and celebrating the experience with clapping. It’s a collegial act of celebration and appreciation for the opportunity of living in a free country, and trading in the greatest market in the world. Something for which we should all be truly thankful.
