1903
You will have to define what you mean by “airplane.” Several people made gliders years before the Wright brothers flew at Kitty Hawk. There were also several powered aircraft designed and built prior to the Wright brothers, but none flew successfully before theirs (at least none were documented to have flown successfully).
*Edit* Ah, but the question asked when was the first airplane MADE, not when one was first successfully FLOWN.
The first successful gliders were flown in 1891. Many were made and attempted flight before then, but were unsuccessful.
Answer by Mark H1903. Airplanes mean powered flight. If unpowered the correct term is glider…Sorry but airplanes have engines. Gliders do not. They glide… If the question means when anyone first attempted powered flight it would go back before the Wrights. But the Wrights were the first recorded proven to have done so and repeated it. The real genius was the little known mechanic who developed and built the engine though. That was the solution to powered flight. The Wrights airframe was nothing outstanding….Answer by Rob G
Define airplane and what you mean. Technically, you’re asking what year one was actually made (i.e. not necessarily successfully flown). Do you mean powered flight or unpowered? Gotta be very specific when it comes to a question like this one.
Even though the wright brothers are given credit for the first successful powered flight, it doesn’t necessarily mean they were the first ones to make a powered airplane. There were probably lots of people who made them…they just never flew.
Answer by ComairMany airplane and gliders were made to date way back when. First flown in 1903.
Many things lead to prove the Wright Brothers didn’t create the first airplane, but Leonardo da Vinci, and many old old inverters.
