: What year did digital cameras start outselling film cameras?
I recently bought a film camera and was just curious – around what year did digital begin to outsell film?
I remember as a kid I had my first digital camera in 1999. I was the first at school to have one. Still, I think I mostly saw film being used until about maybe 2003.
So I assume somewhere around that time period? Early 2000’s?

Youre about right.
Digital cameras started to push themselves on the market around the late 90s. just before 2000, 1997-1999. kodak was retrofitting canon dslrs so you could use the eos mount lenses.
A few years later canon released their own.
So the early 2000 seems about right. Before then, cameras were pretty much bought by serious amateurs and professionals only. Digital cameras really opened up a new market for the camera companies
