Flapper Girl: What would you think of a father that used an oven timer for spanking ?
I read about a father that would set an oven timer for two to ten minutes depending on the offense and spanked until it went off. The child was around 12 years old. I thought it was disgusting.

its called child abuse! there is a difference between a spanking and abusing a child!! hopefully the authorities would have been called and the child removed from the environment!!Answer by liriaaco
That is over the top.
One smack should be enough and besides by age 12 you should be able to reason with them. Make the punishment fit the crime. eg If they are late into bed they go early for a week, Doing something wrong on the computer then no computer for a while, Damaging property then they must pay for or repair that property etc.Answer by brittany_tarn
That IS child abuse. He obviously doesn’t even know the purpose behind spanking. You’re supposed to show the kid that there are consequences to his actions in a quick, somewhat embarrassing way so he won’t do it again. That doesn’t mean there’s a time limit! A few seconds is good, using a timer is straight out abuseAnswer by outkaste
Obviously you guys haven’t witnessed how Asian (some, not all) families punish their kids. I know of one family that would hit their kid with a stick until there were marks on his skin ‘cos he got bad grades and make him go to school the next day in a short sleeve shirt and shorts so that other kids could see that he’d been punished for being ‘stupid’.
Disclaimer *very important*: I am NOT saying that all Asian families behave that way, only a few outstanding ones. Although, perhaps, they do beat their kids more often than Americans do.
Answer by randctcAbout the time I was 10 years old timed spankings started (I’m 48 now). The timed spankings were always over mom’s or dad’s knee with a very small, lightweight paddle. The spanks were quick but not very hard at all, and never left any marks and the redness was gone within an hour or so. They could be anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, and I was always told how long it would be before it started. This was used at home and only for minor spankable offenses. For more serious bad behavior I would be spanked with a larger paddle or a belt while bent over the arm of the sofa. These spankings didn’t last nearly as long a time, but were much harsher. The redness would last several hours and occasionally light bruising would still be visible the next morning. Regardless of the type or length of spanking, I always knew that my parents did what they did out of love, and they were always calm about it (even taking ‘time out’ themselves to cool off if they were angry or upset with me). I was never punished (spanking or otherwise) in anger or the heat of the moment, and that is the real key.
