What types of labs are done in anatomy/physiology in college?

Heather: What types of labs are done in anatomy/physiology in college?
I am getting ready to take Biology 210, which is anatomy/physiology. I am actually curious as to what types of labs are done during the course of both Biology 210 and 211?

I don’t know if this helps, but I am going to school for nursing.

Thanks!

Anatomy will contain many dissection labs, where you dissect animals and identify tissues, organs, organ systems, muscles, etc.

I am currently taking physiology, but there are no labs for this class. If the class is integrated, you will likely do dissections, identify body parts, and learn where they are located and what they do.

It depends upon the professor as to what is done in the labs. Typically there will be labs in which you study the cells and tissues so you will be using the microscope. Then basic anatomy of the body systems in which dissection of some organism will be done. Organisms can range from fetal pigs, to mink or rabbits, cats or at some schools human cadavers. Physiology experiments may be included as the study of organ systems progresses. For example, frog muscles may be used to study muscle physiology and nerve functions. In some systems, you and your classmates will be the study organism for things such as reflex arc, special senses, blood pressure, digestion, urinary system.

A&P can be challenging but very interesting course!

I just finished anatomy&physiology…and in lab we did:

– Identification of tissues
– Identification of bones (on models)
– Identification of markings on bones
– Identification of muscles including the origins, insertions and actions
– Dissection of cats and identification of muscles on them
– Dissection of sheep brains and identification of different lobes and other structures
– Identification of structures on the brain (models)
– Identification of the different parts of the integumentary system on models (parts of the nail, hair, layers of the skin etc)

Honestly my first semester (zool 141) all we did was disect a sheeps brain and look at a lot of bones. I think next semester (zool 142) We disect a cat? Nothing that fun but I go to University of Hawaii (Maui Campus).
