Derek: What type of bike would be the best for a UC berkeley student?
I am 6’2” and I need a bike for the upcoming school year, but I’m having a tough time figuring out which type of bike is best suited to the campus and area of berkeley.
I am planning on living about 8-10 blocks from campus and I’m an architecture student, biking would be much quicker than the bus or walking.

Bikes are not common at UCB. Why exactly do you want a bike?
If you’re going to ride, get the cheapest possible beater bike you can find. Bike theft is rampant in Berkeley.
People ride whatever they have BMX, single and 3 speed cruisers, 10 speed street bikes, mountain bikes. Pick something that will fit your size. South and West of campus is pretty flat. North is hilly.
Answer by LilyMy choice bike is a 1980’s Peugeot road bike. It is light weight. Easy to maintain. Simple frame. And it doesn’t gather attention. I wouldn’t recommend buying anything fancy, especially in college, being a college student myself, flashy bikes attract attention, and get stolen.
