Sophia’s Mommy: What to send Brother for Christmas who is in the military?
I have a brother who is stationed on the USS nimitz overseas and he asked for Tang and Beef Jerky but what else? What is allowed to go through customs? I can’t get in contact with him so I want to know what would be good gifts to get?

I think he would like definetly a picture of your whole family and a real long letter, like summing up the year. As far as other things, just think of his hobbies. If he plays guitar, get him guitar strings, stuff like that.
I think you are on the right track with the Tang and Jerky, clearly he misses some comfort food, try and remember what he likes, pop tarts, oreo’s, bbq chips, maybe even a sports illustratedAnswer by Roland M
Christmas can be lonely for sailors overseas. I know this because I was in the Navy. Here is what he will treasure: if you can make him a little photo album of all his friends, girls and guys and the people he knows and likes. Have each one write a little note to him as well, and stick these all in the album.Answer by katie-louise

I agree about the long letter. My brother is currently in Afghanistan and that’s one thing that he told me that he appreciates. Maybe he would like some books or crosswords. Something to pass the time when he’s off duty. We got my brother a big book of sudoku when he was in Korea and he said it was a lifesaver! I appreciate your family’s service and sacrifice! I don’t know where the ship is stationed/anchored, but if it’s in an Muslim area, he cannot receive pork, porn, or booze. That’s what the post office will stop. You’ll have to fill out a form stating it’s a gift (you don’t want any of it back), and list what’s in the box. Restrictions depend on what country he’s near, and APOs don’t make a difference.
Now, what you can do. Tang, or powdered mixes to add to water, are welcomed always. Powerade also has a powder form. If your brother works out outside of PT, he might be interested in something like a powder protein.
You could ship soda pop, but you’re going to pay for shipping weight, so I’d avoid. Bottles are better than cans, as they can handle impact better.
Snacks in cellophane are great. My sons asked for jerky, too, and pretzels, and other salty things. Theyr’e limited to what they can buy from their local px, and if your bro’s not close to shore, that’s a limited store.
Hard candies rather than chocolate, since chocolate melts.
Tobacco product, even if he doesn’t use it himself. He can trade for something else among his crew.
Paperback books. They weigh less, and they’ll probably be shared with his crew.
Answer by Uncle PennybagsWell the military is providing all his day to day needs. So you need to think luxuries and entertainment.
Unfortunately, since he’s serving aboard ship, it’s not like they have a lot of personal space to put things.
Certainly send him any foods that he cannot get there that he’s craving.

Aside from video compilations of the family during his time away from home, you can send him a little something that shows your support for what he is doing. There’s this military audio button, just like the staples easy button. Here’s the website that I found: www.hooahbutton.com
