Economist!
I’m kidding, few people actually go on to become economists specifically. Although, speaking of economists, go buy a copy of The Economist. Focus on the types of jobs that are available…not necessarily the “Yay America” articles…You’ll notice that a lot of them are actually available to economics graduates (usually after 5 years of relevant experience). See what is out there!
Your degree/diploma is going to be an asset when you’re looking for a job. Having a diploma says, “I can apply myself and memorize random crap to regurgitate it for exams (then promply erase all that random crap following the exam)”
Obviously, studying business is a going to be an asset because you’ll understand the basics of how a business operates. But your career may not entail studying the economics of that business. Applying for a job with a degree/diploma shows that you are competent, and from there a business may offer to provide you with additional training in the posistion that you’re interested in.
As with biology, few graduates actually become biologists. It’s just a piece of paper showing your comepetance…but you’ll find that most businesses are willing to train you. If you get the right job and show and interest in accounting, then your hirer might subsidize night classes so you could become a certified accountant…
Just make sure you don’t underestimate yourself…apply for jobs, even if you feel that they’re above your skill level (within reason…like, you’re not going to be a doctor). My goal is to eventually get onto the Bank of Canada (I need 5 yrs experience before they’ll look at me…). My econ-major friend wants to own an airline…
Find your niche and build on it…or if you really want to learn more, do graduate studies (you could devote the next two years of your life studying the intricacies of the Solow model! WOOT!).
Answer by florecita3_3There are plenty of options, it just depends on your interests. Graduates of Economics programs can become:
CEO’s
Financial analysts, planners, researchers for the government or private institutions, or banks.
Business consultants
Investment banker or consultant
Another option is to go on to law school. Law schools look favorably upon Economics degrees, and they generally have higher scores on the LSAT
I’m dual majoring in Economics and Marketing Management. I want to go into consulting.
