Good response to speed of rapid pic taking and exposure is the key to a good flash. It should have quick refresh. Canons have nice ones. I cannot recommend one because you did not say what your budget on this one is.
They have some very nice flash add-ons at a price you can afford.
Canon is a good make and all their flash is good. Just choose one that you can afford and you can’t go wrong.

Answer by PrincessI can recommend 2 great flashes for you:
Canon Speedlite 430EX
Canon Speedlite 580EX II
I use the 580EX II… this is the best external flash that Canon has on the market right now! I’ve been very happy with mine :o) You can put it on a lightstand and use it like a strobe as well.
Answer by nutmacAlthough Canon makes 4 different flash attachments, there are only two models you should consider for events such as wedding: Canon 430EX Speedlight and Canon 580EX II Speedlight.
The main differences between these two models (other than the price) are:
1. Light Coverage: 580EX II can cover 190 feet at 105mm focal length. 430EX can cover 141 feet. 580EX II is particularly more effective as bouncing light source, such as lighting umbrella or diffuser.
2. Master Flash: 580EX II can remotely trigger additional “slave” flash units (e.g., 430EX). 430EX cannot.
3. Power Source: 580EX II can be powered by batteries (4 AA’s) or optional AC adapter. 430EX supports only battery power (4 AA’s).
4. Auto Focus: If you have high-end Canon SLR models with 45 auto focus points (e.g., EOS 5D), you will want 580EX II. 430EX supports 9 auto focus points.
5. Ergonomics: 580EX II has additional custom settings, easier to use controls, and swivel and rotate more.
P.S. Canon will be offering $ 15 (430EX) and $ 30 (580EX II) instant rebates to authorized dealer this Sunday (May 18 to July 19).
Answer by V2K1Wedding photographers usually buy the most powerful on-camera units possible, because they have to light up large groups of people.
The brand I see most often is Metz, and they’re usually powered by big Quantum battery packs. Wedding shooters may also have other flashes triggered by radio units.
Portraits are almost always done with at least two studio-grade lights set in softboxes or umbrellas.
Alien Bees sells reasonably-priced units, and a portable battery pack for location shooting.
