Rachel C: What should be included in a portfolio if you are looking for a tattoo apprenticeship?
I am interested in learning to tattoo and have read that I need a portfolio and may have to pay for an apprenticeship or at least work my butt off. However, before I even go talk to any artists, I want to make sure my art portfolio is up to snuff. Is there anything in particular that should be included more so than other stuff. What do artists expect to see because I can continue working on my art if need be. How many works are generally in a portfolio. I want to knock their socks off. Should it be “flash” style and realistic? If you are a tattoo artist, what do you like to see in a potential apprentices portfolio?
Also, I have heard that it is more difficult for girls to get tattooing apprentices than guys. Is this true? I don’t want to give off the impression I am some Kat Von D wannabe. Any advice?
My regular tattooer does not take on apprentices, so off I go to find someone who does.

I like to see art in all media, not just drawings. If you include your own flash, great, that’s important, but, I also like to see watercolors, charcoal, colored pencils, abstract, a variety really.
I am a female, and got my apprenticeship from my artist years ago. It’s not necessarily more difficult for women, it’s just difficult all around. I hope things work out for you, keep us posted.
