Ellie: What pony would be suitable for mountain nd moorland showing?
I am looking to buy a pony or horse that I can show in moutain and moorland classes but also ride (mainly hacks/trail riding and a bit of jumping). I would like something around 15hh maybe a little less. My lil’ exmoor is too small and getting quite old! Awww. So far I have looked a fell ponies and they seem like the right type of pony.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance:)

maby a welsh cob or fell they are good little ponies
Maybe look at a cross breed pony ive gotta new forest cross irish sports horse and he stands at 14.2h he is only young but done quite well in one m/m showing class and landed 3rd.He also is a very good jumper so cross breeds give you a bit of everything. but fell ponies sound like a good breed to look at!
good luck : )Answer by faye
Right for M&M classes the pony must be Purebred and one of the 9 british native breeds. The pony must be registered with the correct breed society and within the height limit of the breed.
The majority of the native breeds do not get any taller then 14.2hh. So if you want something 15hh then you will have to get a welsh section D as that is the only breed that go bigger
The connemara has a max height of 14.2hh, so does the highland, dales and the new forest pony.
The fell pony is not to excede 14hh
The welsh B and welsh C not to excede 13.2hh.
The welsh A is not to excede 12hh and i cant remember the exmoor and dartmoor but they are not much bigger, obviously the shetland is much smaller.
All the native breeds are capable of doing a bit of jumping and hacking, the highlands tend to be less able to jump then the finer breeds such as the connemaras but they still can pop over a working hunter course.
Answer by Gemma BI think welsh ponies do good at shows and tend to win quite alot (:
i had a welsh and it used to win all the time (:
she was a grey 12.2hh pony
i loved her too bits
but i would go for a welsh section c/d
but be careful for it not to get fat as the judges will rank you right to the bottom (:
