Nephtari: What plants can I grow in a garden with very rocky shallow soil?
I’ve just moved into a new house and I’m sure my garden has been laid on all the rubble from the house build. Huge boulders and lots of rocks just under the surface of the soil. I don’t want to dig out the entire garden it would be too big a job. I wondered if there are any plants out there that would survive this kind of environment?

Dig in lots of grit to make the drainage good and plant Alpine type plants (rockery types) and also heathers and other plants found in mountainous regions.
Try growing plants in pots and containers. The most important should be the weather and temperature.
Most of the plants are able to grow well in containers. You can plant all vegetables, strawberries and flowers.
You treat the ground below as just another piece of landing place. You put all the pots and containers on top and grow.
You can amend the soil in stages. Dig nothing, try growing, composting and raising worms together.
If you want to grow directly into the ground, then you need manpower to clear the rocks for you.
Try growing squash, cucumbers, beans, potatoes, tomatoes in good drainage pots or in a plastic basket and place on the ground. Watch nothing but only your vegetables.
Alternatively, you can also set a large size good drainage container on top of the ground. Make this container as your raised bed garden.
I hope it helps!
Answer by horsehi…… more often than not if your house is a new build it will have rubble buried in the garden area, and then a layer of soil to cover it. Is your grass a nice green colour or yellow, you probably have a lot of lime from the rubble i would suggest digging it off and putting in more soil , failing that get a soil kit to Analise the condition of your soil and buy your plant’s based on the result’s of the test.Answer by meanolmaw

Answer by Soldier’s GirlMoss roses will grow over rocks and they are beautiful and so easy. Although called roses they are not, they are succulent.
