Tyler: What is a good motorcycle with great gas mileage?
I have only ridden on a motorcycle once so I am very much a beginner so I don’t want a powerhouse. I am sick of getting 25 mpg in my car though and I want a bike that can get 70+ that won’t break the bank to buy. Any suggestions?

Motorcycles don’t get nearly as good mileage as they should, because they are very ‘dirty’ aerodynamically. In a motorcycle at 60 mph you are spending most of your horsepower just fighting the wind.
So smaller bikes, 90s, 150s, 250s, get better mileage, mostly just because they go slower. Wind resistance changes with with the square of the change in speed, so if you speed up from 20 to 40 mph you are not using twice as much gas, you’re using 4 times as much.
If you don’t plan to do a lot of high-speed riding (i.e. on the highway) a 250cc bike will get you maybe 55-60 mpg. If you’re just riding around on city streets, a 100cc scooter will get you over 100 mpg, and that’s mostly because you’re going 30 mph most of the time. The smallest category is a moped, a bicycle with a tiny motor on it, and those usually get 125-150 mpg. But a big, powerful, road-going bike, like a 750cc bike, will get 45 mpg.

Couple things to consider.
Insurance and Maintenance.
You’ll still need a car (unless you go totally die-hard) = car AND bike insurance.
Motorcycle maintenance is costly, tire-wear, chain, sprocket … all need replacing more often than a car’s. 8-10K on a set of $ 400 tires is not uncommon, more $ if you want better tires. Depending on the bike and your training/experience insurance (or lack thereof) is not cheap.
Suggest you think about it a bit more, the only time it’s really less expensive is the ‘totally die-hard’ method and that is TOO MUCH FUN to discuss on a family-themed forum.

Really, it all depends on how you ride. I have a Suzuki Boulevard M50 (cruiser, 805cc with a top speed of 131) and I get on average 68-71MPG. However, if I ride like a douche, I only get around 58-62MPG.

You can save money *only* if you sell the car, or if you do over 10,000 miles a year on a *small* motorcycle in lieu or the car.
