I know that a theory explains a law, so what law does the Unified Field Theory explain? Or why is the Unified Field Theory a theory?

Definitively speaking, a theory is a unifying principle that explains a body of facts and the laws based on them. In other words, it is an explanation to a set of observations. Over time, many theories have been found to be false, usually when additional observations or facts contradict the theory. For instance, the theory that the earth was the center of our solar system was supported for many centuries by the scientific community.
A ‘unified field theory’ is a type of field theory that allows all of the fundamental forces (gravitation, electromagnetism, the weak interaction, and the strong interaction) between elementary particles to be written in terms of a single field. There is no accepted unified field theory yet, and this remains an open line of research. The term was coined by Albert Einstein who attempted to unify the general theory of relativity with electromagnetism.
