Marla: What kind of wedding dresses can a 36 year old first time bride wear?
I don’t think I would choose a big fluffy dress anyway but my mother acts like I should wear a pants-suit down the aisle because of my age. What do you think is age appropriate for a first time bride of my age? I would love to see sample pictures if you would post links, that would be excellent! Thank you. Please, no rude answers.

You can wear whatever you want. It’s YOUR wedding, not your mother’s. Choose something that is comfortable and makes you feel like the beautiful bride you will be.

I’m a professional dressmaker who has worked with brides from 20 to well into the 40’s. You are not your grandmother and I do not get the impression you are a woman who never, ever wears a dress, so please do not wear a pantsuit. There are many lovely wedding gowns and dresses that are absolutely appropriate for a bride your age, which by my experience is about average. What matters is your personal style, your figure, your wedding location and time of day, and your budget. Start looking and trying oh various dresses. You will know when your have the right match, just like you knew your fiance was the one.
Happy shopping! And I have no idea what kind of relationship you have with your mother, but if you think she will be a downer, shop alone or with one really close friend.

I totally agree with the other answers here.
I too am a dressmaker of 30+ years & always tell my brides that regardless of age they should choose an outfit ( be that a * puffball dress* or jeans & a t shirt) that reflects their personality & the atmosphere they wish to achieve for their celebration.
I checked the * ubride * site mentioned & it does have some lovely styles.
THINK outside the square & look at all sorts of gowns / outfits ; not just ones labeled ‘ bridal’.
your wedding dress is whatever you choose to wear for the occasion. check out evening dresses, cocktail dresses .
Also make sure that you choose a colour that flatters your complexion be that white or something else. one of the most flattering gowns I can recall was a pale pink for a lady who was very fair skinned & had naturally white hair . The pink made her glow whereas white would have overpowered her.
take a trusted friend – in this case NOT your mother – with you to look at different styles .
Actually I am about to make a wedding dress for a 36y/o 1st time bride & she has chosen blue in a grecian type style long gown with a small train . She is a red head & white is not very flattering on her.
CONGRATULATIONS & good luck
Answer by Myth_UnderstoodWhat you want is something that’s tasteful, classy and elegant. Instead of a big poufy white thing that might not be age appropriate, why not try something in pale lavender, or pale peach, or another color that compliments your skin and coloring. You might not like the idea of a pants suit, but why not a longer skirt with a matching jacket in a nice dove grey with fine pink pinstripes. I’ve seen things like that, and the beauty of it is … you’ll be able to keep wearing it for other things.
I’m not saying that 36 is over the hill by any stretch. However, you do want to err on the side of caution and taste. I saw a gorgeous suit that came to just below the knee that had a slight trumpet effect towards the hem for a nice flair, and it had a fitted jacket that was just divine. If you could get a nice lace camisole to wear under it, that would hit just the right note, I think. It was in a deep grey with pink pinstripes, but the pinstripes were verrrry pale and looked white until you got closer. Some nice strappy shoes would be perfect and dressy enough for the occasion.
I’ve also seen pictures in magazines of more mature wedding gowns in silver, bronze and champgne tones that are just gorgeous. One had a longer ‘overcoat’ (for want of a better term) made of lace, and I saw another with a long overcoat that looked like it was organza – very classy. I loved the look.
Start shopping EARLY EARLY EARLY, and I’m sure that with some help ofthe consultants at the dress stores, you’ll find something that suits you. I think your first instinct to stay way from a big fluffy dress is a good one.
Congrats and best of luck to you.
Answer by nova_queen_28If you want the big puffy dress, you can have it!
I was 34 when I married, and for my own comfort and style preferences I went with a more casual style wedding dress (some dress designers have “informal” lines) – here are pics:

But you are in no way limited to the style of dress you can wear – you are a first time bride!!! HECK, even 2nd (or 3rd) time brides wear the big puffy dress sometimes!
Answer by hollywoodmelodyOh my goodness such great answers but here is my two cents,,,,,,,,
As a bridal boutique I am seeing a lot of older first time brides. I get so excited when I see them trying on wedding gowns because they realize they have more options and more color choices than they thought. They usually bring their daughter in with them and I get to see the roles reversed as daughters advise their moms of what not to wear
