Kimberly: What kind of vegetables work best in a bag garden?
I want to start a bag garden this summer. What type of vegetables and or fruit will work in a bag garden. For those of you that have had a bag garden what are some problems you faced with it? Thanks!
My daughter wants to plant watermelon, will that be hard?

I’ve only grown potatoes this way, but given that experience, I assume watermelon would work too. Be careful selecting which variety of watermelon you select. The popular seedless varieties require a pollinator to produce so you will also have to grow at least a second watermelon too. Most of the time, I’ve seen the “Sugar Baby” variety recommended as a pollinator for seedless watermelons.
I’ve also done potatoes, along with cucumbers and pole beans. I think any type of vining plant (squash, canteloupe, melon) would also work. But, as far as growing watermelon ~ they take a fairly long growing season. I can’t grow them myself because we don’t have a long enough period of hot weather where I live. Do check this out with a local nursery.
If watermelons won’t work, something that your daughter might enjoy planting is jack-o-lantern or pie pumpkins.
