What kind of used bike would you recommend for commuting and exercise?

HOLLER!: What kind of used bike would you recommend for commuting and exercise?
I’m looking for a used bike that I can ride to class (1-2mi) and ride on paved bike trails for exercise. What kind of bike should I be looking for? I’m not looking to spend a lot because I am a poor college student.
