It depends on what you want to do. If you want to teach music, get a Bachelor of Arts degree. If you want to be a top-notch performer, go for the Bachelor of Music degree. The former has more broad classes, while the latter forces you to focus on your instrument.
Universities may offer many different types of music majors, including:
Music Performance
Music Education
Music Composition
Music Business/Management
Music Production and Engineering
Electronic Production and Design or Music Recording Technology
To name a few of the more common ones out there. What kind of music degree you pursue would generally directly correspond to what you’d want to do with it. If you’re desire was wanting to write music, you’d likely pursue composition. If you wanted to be a high school band/choir teacher, you’d likely pursue music education. And so on…
But when looking for a University for a music degree, make sure you do your research. Not every University will offer a wide variety of different music majors to choose from. Some may only offer a basic music degree, whereas others will offer several different types.
Answer by PaulTo the first poster, you can’t teach in schools with a BA, you need an Ed. degree for certification.
It’s hard to say for sure what you should do, since you don’t mention what instrument you play (or if you’re a singer). Just making an educated guess, I’m thinking you may want to look into a major in either music performance or composition.
