What kind of majors/careers are there for people who want to help people for a living?

sugarcooki08: What kind of majors/careers are there for people who want to help people for a living?
I am a student in my first year of college. I am undeclared as of right now, and searching for a possible major/career. All I really know that I want to do is help people, whether that is working at some kind of homeless shelter or orphanage or going to another country. However, I am not sure what kind of major I should choose for this type of passion or what kinds of careers are available for what I want to do. Any suggestions?

In general, working in the Non-Profit sector and charities does not require a specific degree. A couple of people I know who work in charities come from both humanities and sciences.

Another way to look at helping people: medicine, especially therapeutic careers.

Here It Is:

Teacher

Childcare Worker

Firefighter

Nurse

Social Worker

Doctor

** These all branch out to tens and tens of sub-careers. Ex: Surgeon In Doctor.

More than half of the people who go to college say they want to help people/make a difference. But when it comes down to it and it’s time to look for a real job, the pull of $ is too great. Mostly all of the jobs where you are really helping people day in and day out, you are getting paid squat. I don’t know how it works out like that, but it does. Anyway, to answer your question.

-You can major in anything, get a master’s in social work and become a social worker or counselor (drug/alcohol).

-You can teach in a poor quality inner city school that needs good teachers.

-You can join Peace Corps or Doctors Without Borders (don’t need to be a doctor).

If you truly want to do it, I applaud you. Very few people (me included) are willing to sacrifice their earning potential to take on a job where you truly help people on a daily basis…
