Nikki: What kind of gymnastics must you be able to do to be a Clemson University cheerleader?
I’m planning on attending the school next year, and a former gymnast. (Recently injured and haven’t done much in a year.)
And I was wondering what sort of gymnastics skills (as well as dancing) one must have to be eligible.
Thanks! 🙂 And what sort of floor do you guys use? Is it spring, foam, mats, or just plain gym floor?

If you are a girl you will want to be able to fly partner stunts such as tosses and rewinds and be able to do double down dismounts youtube it for explanations. As far as tumbling goes round of back hand spring layout is about medium tuck at the very least and a full will guaruntee you a spot. Dance wise just basic body control and rythm. you will also need jumps such as a toe touch ( hyper extended) and a pike.
I would assume that you would need at LEAST a round off, flip flop, back layout on a hard floor. It couldn’t hurt to throw a layout full during tryouts if you are a good twister—they appear to have men and women doing double fulls on their squad.
Make sure your tumbling isn’t off-axis, and make sure you have a solid cartwheel. In terms of dance elements, I suggest working on split jumps, straddle jumps, pike jumps, switch leaps, and double turns.
I don’t think practicing full turns in attitude and Y would be a bad bet, either, because you really need to get the flexibility back.
Most cheerleading squads that come to our gym want their tumblers to be versatile enough to handle the big skills but also flexible enough to deal with contexts where you might not have a floor and/or podium and thus cannot throw your big skills (e.g. basketball and football games), and end up dancing and jumping instead. They don’t want to have to ditch you or not have you on if you can only perform on a gymnastics floor.
Answer by Shallbei’m a cheerleader and a gymnast well level 10. and we do a lot of tumbling and stuff in cheer leading.but also the cheer leading coaches teach us some of tumbling most of us can do a round of lay out on hard floor and we practice on grass hard floor mats all that stuff and we compete on usually mats just in case we drop someone which has never happened
