Jesse: What kind of bike lock should I buy for college?
I just recently purchased a nice road bike and I will be bringing that with me to college. I need suggestions on what types of locks I should purchase (links would be preferred) for my bike. I heard that people like to steal parts at college as well, so what types of locks do I need to prevent that from happening. Your answers are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

doesn’t matter what kind you buy. If some one wants your bike, they will find a way to cut/break the lock.
Like the first poster said if someone wants to steal your bike they will figure out a way to do it, but you can make life more difficult for the thief. The best lock is going to cost you about 90 bucks but it came in first in this article:

When I want my bike to be secure I use a U-Lock. If I am just running in somewhere safe for a couple of minutes, then I will use a cable lock, but I always lock my bike. One technique some people do is paint the bike in flat black or something equally ugly so it won’t appear expensive.
Answer by WillThe first thing you’ll want is a U-Lock, which goes through your front wheel, the frame and the bike rack. It is made out of a U-shaped piece of rubber-coated steel and a lock-on segment that makes it into more of a D-shape. Kryptonite makes some good ones. If you have a nice saddle, a saddle leash might be a good idea; it is left on all the time and is pretty light. If you are really concerned, get a second lock (a cable this time) and run it through the rack and the back wheel, and even the seat if you wish. Use it as a second measure to keep your components.
Even with an amazing lock system, the most important thing is that you keep it inside at night! Anyone who has his eye out for stealing components will be prowling at night. Find a good place to lean your bike up against a wall near your door, and never leave your bike somewhere overnight.Answer by SoccerRefToo

At least two locks. One a krypto Ulock, regular key. 2nd lock, I just saw at Lowe’s. It is made by Schlage, A 6 foot 5/8 inch cable lock ( a 5/8 inch cable wow!!). It can be keyed to match your dorm or home key too! If you can afford a 3rd lock, a ‘Street Cuff’. The Ulock and “Street Cuff’ fix to the frame, rear wheel and a fixed object, the cable (5/8 of an inch!) weaves thru the wheels, frame, and locks … as well as around / through the fixed object. Weave the locks thru the wheels and frame and attach to a fixed object / bike rack. The idea is to have the thief need to bring so many tools that it would be soooo obvious. Each of these locks will require a different major tool to defeat it!
I used to store the bike in my dorm and apartments by standing it on its back wheel in a corner. Be sure to lock it there too. In real bad theft situations take the front wheel and bike seat with you! Put the saddle in the back pack you use to carry your books and locks in.
For my daughters bikes we put a rear rack on the bike, and attached a large stainless steel basket to it. You can throw in your books, soccer bags, even a large bag of groceries in with no muss or fuss.
