On the right side of the window, with every folder except “home” there is a two inch wide advertising frame…. I have it, but others I work with do not… how the heck do I make it go away, it seriously wastes austere desktop “real estate”

The only way you can get rid of the ads is to pay for Yahoo! Mail Plus:

Either your friends are paying for Plus (which doesn’t get ads) or Yahoo! is testing out different ad configurations with different users on the new beta.
