A horse can carry 20% to 25% of its own weight easily. At under 80 pounds, you could ride just about anything but a mini. Ponies can actually carry more weight, pound for pound, then a horse can.
So the smallest you can ride is a small shetland. You might look a little odd, heightwise, but you wouldn’t hurt him. The wider he is, of course, the more of your leg he’ll take up, so a small round pony would look fine.
Answer by Anna CThe size doesn’t matter as much as the weight. Most shetlands can carry teenagers but some taller, finer ponies may not be dtrong enough. It also depends how long you would ride for. I’m 14, heavier than you, and ride a 10HH shetalnd fine and jump 11.2 ponies. It all depends on the pony and circumstances.Answer by L G
The other two answers above me answer it pretty well, but I’m just wondering if you’re going to have a growth spurt soon. If that’s the case, it might be better to get a slightly taller pony…
And of course, it depends on what you want to do with your pony, and how far you want to go.Answer by Rosi M
It’s not what the pony can carry, it’s what you look in correct proportion to. There’s nothing sillier than seeing this big leggy teen sitting on this tiny pony with their legs dragging the ground…
4’7″, well somewhere around 14 hands or taller.
Best of luck.
Answer by ibbibudYou are small enough that you can ride whatever pony you want. If you outgrow it? There are other things you can do that are fun, like driving. I am 5 feet tall and can ride Shetlands fine. I don’t weigh much and am proportional. If you find your leegs are really hanging too low, go up a bit in pony size or try a rounder pony.Answer by florayg
10 hands. Even smaller if it’s a Shetland. I’m 5ft and weigh 7 stone and regularly ride an 11.2 hands. be grateful you are small, you can ride all the really fun horses everyone else is too big for. I’m nearly 50 and I still prefer the little ones!Answer by Molly
The smallest horse I would ride is a larger shetland. My cousins have one and ive seen adults ride her. That may be a little too much weight on her with adults, but for your size its fine. She can also carry small carts with two to i think 4 people in them!!!Answer by HorsePoopSmellGood
11hh & up would work for you.
