College Kid: What is the purpose of reading novels and literature in English classes?
Like in English classes, you have to read a bunch of literature and be quizzed on it. What is the sole purpose of doing that?

Answer by pegTo have the students understand different forms of English like literature, poems, plays, etc. If a teacher really enjoys that then he/she will more than likely incorporate it into their lessons.Answer by luna
Well-written novels examine the general questions that humans ponder. Through reading them we can answer questions about ourselves and humanity in general. Basically, it’s to make you think and exercise your brain. Don’t be afraid of it. Try to get something out of it and enjoy the books.Answer by stella646

The reading of literature, among other things, is used to develop ‘critical thinking’, which is required to graduate with a degree from a 4 yr. college.
