julie: What is the proper tip to leave for housekeeping at a motel?
We stayed at an older motel on Route 66 in Missouri from late Wednesday night till Saturday morning. There was an envelope left for a tip for housekeeping. The rent was $ 65.00 a night and all they did make the beds (not change the bedding), empty the trash and replace used towels. What would the proper tip have been?

$ 2 – $ 5 max a day.
uh oh I didn’t even know you tipped them now I feel like an ass!Answer by CAT
If you do not feel they earned a tip then nothing. 2-5 is definitely appropriate leave all tips under pillow so maid will know it is for them unless, like in this case an envelope was provided. You are never obligated to tip anyone if the service does not meet your expectations. The truth is most people do not know about tipping maids.Answer by YME
I left a clump of ear wax and some belly button cheese. I left the bathroom flooded too, but no real monetary tip to speak of.Answer by Alygirl

Since the staff are paid to do a job a tip should not be necessary. I never leave tips. Mark.Answer by 53108
You do not leave a tip for housekeeping. You do tip bellhops or room service, but not housekeeping.Answer by Bill
I always leave a tip for housekeeping if they do a good job. Minimum $ 2, max $ 5 is fine.Answer by Bert Weidemeier
They are getting a salary, and are not really doing anything for you directly, so you really don’t need to leave a tip.
They’re cleaning for the owners, let them leave a tip.
