What is the most important record in sports history?

ccccccc: What is the most important record in sports history?
I, along with most true sports fans have long considered baseball’s homerun record the most hallowed(important) sports record around. Now that all of baseball’s stats have been tainted by steriods (especially Barry Binds and the HR record) what do you think is the most impprtant sports record around?

Cal Ripken’s games played——’nuff said

Answer by Mr. Stuart
I guess I would have to say the HR records, but a Record that, in my opinion, will never ever ever be broken is Orel Hershier’s scoreless inning streak! 59 or whatever innings.

What do you watch for every single game. Two things. STRIKEOUTS, and HITS…… There is nothing more important that efficiency in both of those areas, PERIOD. For me, Hit that dang ball.

Answer by Joe D
Having lived in Arlington during the era he pitched for the Rangers, I can personally attest he is the best:

NOLAN RYAN:
With a blazing fastball that approached 100 miles per hour and a work ethic like none other, Nolan Ryan dominated hitters for an unparalleled 27 seasons on his way to 5,714 strikeouts, an all-time record. During four decades of prominence, he totaled 324 victories and a host of major league records. Most notable of his milestones are a mystifying seven no-hitters and 12 one-hitters. The eight-time All-Star fanned a single-season record 383 batters in 1973, and his career strikeouts encompassed 1,176 different players.

The fastest, The strongest, the one able to jump the highest.
The real athlete. Possibly the decathlete.
Then there are hitters, throwers, punchers, kickers.
There are too many field to narrow it down but for me.
UFC Champion pretty much covers it.

Answer by txguy8800
I kinda agree with you, the HR record is the most appreciated.

Other records that I’d put in as Honorable mention would be:

1. The most Superbowl Wins.
2. The record in the 100-yard Dash.
3. Cal Ripkins games played streak.
4. Most games in a row with a hit.

I think, however, that they should throw out every baseball record for the past 15 years because of steroids. As it is many youth today find baseball boring. In the long run, steroid use will only cause more people to turn away from the game.

Cal Ripken’s consecutive games played streak. I believe that’s the most important.

I know nada about baseball. I think that Jesse Owen beating Hitlers airiens in the Olympics was a pretty awesome thing. He completely bummed out Hitler and his belief that the white man was superior. Go Jesse.

Answer by nihilistnick
The world record for 100m dash is what I would normally say, but that record is just as tainted as Barry Bonds. So instead, let’s go with an undefeated season in the NFL.

Answer by irongriff
i dont know the most important record but the most important stat is slugging. the hardest would be old ross harbourns 59 win season

Answer by bandido
Doesn’t matter how many games somebody played if they sucked the last 5 yrs. If someone played 20+ yrs, they better have put up the numbers(Ryan, Rose,Aaron, etc.) As far as scoring 100pts, great feat but nobody would let that happen again. Consecutive hits and scoreless innings are impressive, but still not the most important. In sports its all about the wins(Cy Young-511)

Answer by Jarred W
56 game hitting streak unbeatable.

Answer by n4utilu5
It used to be 61 and 755. But juiced balls, small ballparks, and performance enhancing drugs killed that. I remember when hitting 40 home runs made you one of the most feared power hitters of the game. That’s not the case anymore.

So my vote now goes to Joe Dimaggio’s 56 consecutive game hit streak.

Answer by jonjon22
Shaun Alexander’s most touchdowns in a season. i wuz at the game when he tied the record and i came home the next day and the yelling and screaming shook quest field so much it was the equivlent 2 a 4.7 earthquake
it was awsome

Answer by Georgie Porgie
Joe D’s hitting streak is one that probably will never broken.

Another important one is Cy Young’s 511 wins.

Answer by Crack The Sky
Well, the Silver Lake Pilots have defeated the Rossville Warriors 13 consecutive times. Doesn’t this count? ☺

Answer by baseballfan
Most IMPORTANT?

I don’t think any sports record is important.

Which is most IMPRESSIVE? There’s a BIG difference.

The most impressive is the record for MOST record setting career home runs.

When Babe Ruth set the career Home Run Record, it was like 250. When he finished the career record was 714… so basically he hit about 460 record home runs. He was esentially THREE TIMES the home run hitter of anyone that had played the game before him.

In order to match that record, a player would have to hit about 1200 home runs… which will NEVER happen.

Second most impressive? Cy Young’s 511 wins.

Or maybe it’s UCLA’s win streak?

Johnny Van Der Meer’s two consecutive no-hitters? You may not be impressed, but when will ANYBODY throw three in a row and break it?

Answer by muddogmartin
I think the NFL Career rushing record is the most important in sports cause of the beating a running back takes over a career compare to a baseball player. Plus it’s a lot harder to do cause of the abuse the body takes over a career and also depends on the strength of his offense line blocking for him. That’s why I think it’s more hallowed record than the baseball home run record.

Joe DiMaggio’s 56 consecutive games hitting streak

Answer by Nestor Q
All records are tough to break. But for anyone who’s ever played hockey must realize that winning one STANLEY CUP is tough enough. You have to go through a grueling season and the playoffs are just as long and grueling as the regular season. Now try going winning four straight? Five straight? No team has ever done that. In the expansion era in the NHL only the New York Islanders were able to accomplish this. So, think about it.

Mark Spitz’s 7 Gold medals in one Olympics.

Answer by wmicah33
Dimaggio’s consecutive game hit streak; maybe even Rickey Henderson’s stolen base record.
