Kaizokuo: What is the history of gachapon capsule toys in Japan, and how long have they been so popular there?
I am writing a report for school, and I need the historical aspects of my topic. I don’t even know what DECADE gachapon became popular to collect in Japan. I don’t know the specifics of what got it popular in Japan WHEN it did. I have already researched things about it, but I just don’t know the history.

I have been in Japan for close to 40 years, and I know they have been along since I was a kid.
I did some research and I found a Japanese site that showed that it started in Japan around 1965 and the cost was 10 yen (about 3 cents back in those days). Now it is about 100 to 200 yen (1 to 2 dollars) a toy.
It was an immediate hit. I think the peak popularity was in the 1980’s.
Answer by thecheapest902Gachapon was imported to Japan in 1965. But the page does not say anything about why it became popular. Kids just liked it.Answer by Akiko
Gachapon machine itself was thought up in the USA as a vending machine for a chewing gum. It is imported to Japan in 1965 for the first time and has been spread all over the country.
When I was a child (early 70’s) it was already very popular among children. Now even some adults love it but I don’t know from when adults were involved.
