What is the difference between a major in Physics vs. a major in Applied Physics?

abracadabra [of Gallifrey]: What is the difference between a major in Physics vs. a major in Applied Physics?
Also, if I am interested in getting a Ph.D in something along the lines of Theoretical Physics or Partical Physics, should I double major? What is a good course for me?
