There is something called Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is caused by less sunlight and effecting mood.
But for some people, they may not have family to spend time with, or it may not be a happy time for them because of something bad that happened.

Both of the above answer’s.
Some have seasonal affective disorder and get depressed when its cold and their is less sunlight. Depending on where they live the Thanksgiving and Christmas season coincides with cold and darkness.
Others have experienced loss or severe trauma around the holidays. Making the holidays difficult without their loved ones or difficult due to the memories of trauma it stirs in them.
Others still have no one or nothing for the holidays. Experiencing poverty around the holidays makes the season stressful due to not being able to provide for loved ones let alone give them all the things associated with the season. Holidays are family and friend time. Without either they only serve as a painful reminder that you are alone.
