topher: What is a traditional gift to give a Cambodian family who has had a death in the family?
My friend’s dad passed away this weekend and I have been searching to try and find a gift that I would be able to get him. I really want to try and hold to the Cambodian traditions with this gift and I need some help. I believe that his father was/is Buddhist. I would greatly appreciate any help.

flowers, are always nice, and non threatening
I think one of their beliefs is to make something out of paper ( house, car, money) that the deceased will like to have in the after life. and i believe that the family throws it in the fire for it to be carried to him.Answer by Snow Globe
I have a number of Khmer friends. I’ll ask.
Back again! Everyone I asked said food is always welcome. Just like in our culture, there are always people coming over, no one in the family feels like shopping, cooking, or baking. Bring them some baked goods, something to pull out when friends drop in to give condolences. Even some six-packs/cases of soda or fruit. Give them a sympathy card and explain that your gift might help them with all the added stress they have in their lives right now.
