Big Swing Face: What is a good book to learn about jazz improvisation?
It does not need to be instrument specific, but I play the trumpet. Books like the “Scale Syllabus” tell me all the notes in the chords, but I know that already. I need to know how the chords relate to each other so I can make up lines and riffs. Is there a book that talks more about the art and technique of improv? Like I said, I don’t want a book to tell me the difference between a Cm and a Cdim.

Look no further than “Stretching Out” (in Bb) by Dominic Spera. I picked my copy up at North Texas many years ago (it was published in 1983) It covers styles/changes from blues to bop and every mode imaginable. (and explains why) Its a pretty thin book (48 pages) but it packs a ton of info. Good luck
There are good series by Aebersold, and Willie Hill. Also, Wynton Marsalis has an instructional series – but last time I checked, it was really pricey. Our own HS Jazz Band (where I used to teach vocal/choral music) has been the ONLY New York state HS invited to the Ellington competition at Lincoln Center, but I am not aware of them using any specific methods as above – one of the directors is a sax player and renowned arranger – lucky, lucky us.
There is no substitute for working with the *raisins* – the old guys who know it all, and are more than willing to let you sit in and learn. Despite all my fancy-schmatzy conservatory education – I will be the first to tell you that NOT all education comes out of a book!
Added – typos fixed. Gotta stop having wine with lunch . . .

Jazz don’t come in a book.
It isn’t something you come up with.

I’ve been going through the “Jazz Chops For Guitar” book and it’s pretty good (comes with an accompanying CD as well). Not sure whether it’s exactly what you’re looking for but I’ll throw it out there in case you want to take a look at it.
It’s more of an exercise and strengthening book, but it helps a lot with technique and if you already know the scales and chord progressions that may be what you need.
This one looks really good too but I haven’t gotten it yet so I only know what it says in the description:
