Gevin: What exactly does a computer science major do? Is it similar to what a computer engineer does?
I’m a 16 year old sophomore in high school. I recently narrowed what I wanted to do, as far as careers go,down to something involving computers. However, i want a major that allows me to create software and hardware(things like robots,databases,etc.). Can i do this with a computer science degree, or a computer engineering degree, or what? I’ve researched this, but i did not find anything of use. So, that being said i would really appreciate any HELPFUL answers. Thanks in advance.

Computer science is mostly software. You’ll design, create or optimize software, networks or databases using different logical and mathematical concepts.
Computer engineering is more focused in computer architecture, hardware/software interface and digital design (chips, memory, FPGAs, etc) and networking from the hardware point of view.
If you want to deal with robots, you should look into electrical or mechanical engineering with a focus on control systems or industrial automation. The main use for robots are in manufacturing plants, to automate production, construction, packaging and many other processes in order to save man power, increase the speed of the process and get more precision.
Databases and robots are kind of unrelated in terms of coursework even though both require strong knowledge of programming.
