The police secure the area by cordoning it off, usually with yellow “Do Not Cross” tape, to prevent onlookers and the mordibly curious from potentially compromising the scene or any pertinent evidence. They will determin a COD (cause of death) on site if possible, and sometime a TOD (time of death) can be established too. The body will be removed by abulance to the morgue. CSI will go over the area marking and bagging any evidence they find, looking at blood spatter patterns, etc. The evidence will then be taken to the nearest crime lab for analysis. If an autopsy is necessary it will be performed within about a day, afterward the body is released to the family of the victim.
