pooks rutherford: What celebrity would be a good spokesperson for the NHL & would also EXPAND the fan base?
Earlier today someone voiced their dislike for Snoop Dogg as the ambassador for the Ducks and the NHL. They didn’t like what he represented and his previous legal issues and drug use.
What celebrity would be a good “hockey” spokesman and appeal to a new “fan base”?
Someone who is “clean” legally and morally would bring in new fans?

Tiger Woods would be good.
Actor-Tom Hanks-Everything he touches turns to gold.
LITY and Mrs.C-I dont care and you dont care about celebrities but there are millions that do.Oprah can make a best seller overnight-And she can make a front runner for a politician like she’s doing too.So celebrities can be important in the growth of a sport.
**LITY-Point taken but I’m talking about in the cities that have teams(Atlanta,Nashville etc.)that dont have as great a support as a Detroit or Chicago.Wouldn’t it help if we got people behind the NHL that wouldn’t normally be in front to let the people know that this is the best sport in the world? Those kids will grow up to be adults and it could only help the league if we do promote the NHL.I can only imagine your grandkids loving the sport but alot of those kids don’t have that hockey influence in there family so who do they look up too?Like I said I could care less if George Clooney likes one presidential candidate over another but when Wayne went to LA and Kurt Russell,Sly Michael J Fox and Hanks came out it was a big boost to hockey in America.
Or I could be talking out my *** its been a long day and I’m going to bed.
brittney spears? 50 Cent?
i actually believe that a guy like lebron james or kobe bryant or even michael jordan could expand the fan base.
how about a political leader? what if John McCain or Barrack Obama went out publicaly and supported hockey and the NHL. dont you think that would question people to at least watch some hockey?
Answer by Like I’m Telling You Who I AI honestly don;t think there are any celebrities who will expand the fan base. The NHL has been operating in the US for 40 years. If it hasn’t caught on by now….it never will.
The big factor is………………..why do we care?
Joe
Aside from a few cities (Nashville, Miami, Phoenix, etc), the increase in fans means very little. Why should I care if little Pee Wee Blackwhite in Shreveport, Louisiana is a hockey fan or not? What effect does it have on my life?
My team has $ 600MM in the bank, Pee Wee will not affect them.
What is NASCAR doing to get the fan in Montana? Nothing! So, why should the NHL, which has always been driven by attendance and not TV numbers, care about ‘expanding’ the fan base.
I think over the 18 months I’ve been on this site, and in particular the last few, the league should be looking at strengthening the existing fan base…………..especially after 40 years of widespread American exposure.
Strengthening the fan base is a hard thing to do
– the players want shootouts, the die-hard fans don’t
– the players wanted a decrease in the delay of games, most fans think it is stupid
– the owners want increased scoring, while the fans want a ‘good’ game
The attraction of hockey of a ten yr old boy does nothing for my enjoyment of the game. Nothing at all. In fact, all it does is give somebody a reason to expand there…………..and we don’t want that! The Gliebermans owning a hockey team….I shudder thinking about that!

LITY has a good point…Why DO we care?
Celebrities are celebrities. Theyre normally nothing but a bunch of brain washed barbies.

I’m willing to let the NHL use my likeness which would surely attract the female fans, but they would be showing up for all the wrong reasons.
Can’t say that I blame them…..

Wouldn’t any celebrity be a good spokesperson for the NHL no matter if it was Snoop Dogg or not. Look at it this way, all these celebrites have a huge fan base and any fans they could bring in would be great. Each celebrity would bring their own flavor for the sport.
If you look, there are a few celebs who are unoffical spokesperson. Kellie Pickler and Carrie Underwood because of Kellie Pickler’s past relationship with Jordin Tootoo has brought in fans and has brought more attention to the sport. The Jonas Brothers for they performed during the All-Star festivites and they have a ton of fans.
I don’t think any celebrity is clean and moral, so it really wouldn’t matter.
Answer by jenjenNone. A Hollyweirdo celeb just isn’t the answer.
Using the actual players to promote the sport is much better.
Parros and his Locks of Love donations and all the other players who do countless hrs and kind things for charity.
Answer by tomjc43The merits of hockey should produce its fan base. The only way to markedly increase the fan base is to increase the understanding and appreciation of the game. Hockey is too complex for the uninitiated fan. That is why there are so many of the same question on this forum. Yes Sidney Crosby is injured but guess what other top players are out and no one has questioned What is Heatley’s Injury going to do to the Sens. The only time McCabe’s name has come up is to trade the bum. Hockey doesn’t need a spokesman it needs an ice age. Freeze the bayous in Louisiana and lets have a good old pond game in New Oreans. That will increase the fan base.
Hey LITY looks like we struck a nerve, can’t say I blame you. Kind of wishing we had a Lacrosse forum. Speaking of lacrosse ever play hockey with a guy named Bergsma.Answer by tfoley5000
