Marionette: What book would you recommend to someone questioning their beliefs?
My girlfriend was raised in a Christian culture, but not in a Christian family. She is pretty much secular considering her worldview, with a film of religiosity that stems mainly from the bible belt society we live in.
She is always telling me about her disagreements with the church, and I told her there are many secular books that she would probably find really interesting. I’m looking for a book that is not heavy duty anti-theistic, but something that she could relate to on an amateur level. Any suggestions?

It’s nothing to do with God but it’s just a really good book that everyone should read.

You could offer her both atheistic books and Liberal Christian books, written by people who might have already considered the problems she is facing and found answers. Then she could choose whether she wants to keep her faith or not fairly.
The Heart of Christianity by Marcus Borg is excellent in this regard.

Have her read Letter to a christian nation by Sam Harris. It answers a lot of questions that christians have about religious disbelief and irreligion. It is a small and inexpensive volume, but has lots of good information and is well written.

‘Right With God’ by John Blanchard – a straightforward book to help those searching for personal faith in God. Published by The Banner of Truth Trust (based in Edinburgh, Scotland and Carlisle, Pennsylvania (go Google).
It goes back to basics, is readily understood and doesn’t beat around the bush. In the meantime, keep on praying for her and keep on trying.

The most important one is the Bible itself. Many people have Bibles but most scarcely open them. If we wish to know about the LORD God and His son Jesus we really, really have to study God’s inspired word. It may seem formidable at first but the more you read and understand the more exciting it gets for you will see and hear the ‘echoes’ in the scriptures. Although there are so many books by many writers in the Bible they all speak with one voice because, as we are told, God has inspired the writers.
If we wish to actually be able to divide truth from fiction in what others tell us about their doctrines then we should be prepared to put a bit of work in by reading all about the subject. In the book of Acts the Bereans were commended for checking what the Apostle Paul taught them against the word of God.
