Nicole: What book would you recommend for a beginner in classic literature?
I’m seventeen years old, and I’m becoming interested in reading classic literature. There are a lot of books I would like to read, but I need suggestions on what would be a good book for someone who has just started to read it. I’ve read The Picture of Dorian Gray (Wilde), and I’m in the middle of A Room with a View (Forster), if it helps with knowing any sort of experience.

TWILIGHT!
Kidding.
Well I’m in your boat, too, and I’m not sure it it’s considered ‘Literature’ or not, but I’ve ordered To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
Other than that, I’ve heard that Jane Eyre is pretty good, and not too difficult to read.
I would Rec. Little Women(1868-1869) and it’s sequel Little Men(1871) and Jo’s Boys(1886) by Louisa May Alcott.
It is about four sisters who live life during that time period. it is loosly based on the authors childhood.
I would also recomend Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery,
Also:
The Once and Future King by T.H. White
A King Aurthur Tale.
With the sequel: The Book of Merlin

Answer by BBI’d suggest:
Wuthering Heights – Emily Bronte
Gulliver’s Travels – Jonathan Swift
A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur’s Court – Mark Twain
The Diary of a Nobody – G & W Grossmith
The Leopard – Giuseppe Tomasi de Lampedusa
A Hero of our Time – Mikhail Lermontov
These are all reasonably short and easy to read if you’re not used to the sometimes leisurely pace of classical literature.
If you want to try longer books I’d recommend:
Anna Karenina – Leo Tolstoy (the best book ever!)
Les Miserables- Victor Hugo
If you fancy trying some poetry I’d suggest the Seamus Heaney translation of Beowulf.
