Sandy W: What are your favorite books on pony care and training?
We are getting a wild pony and while my children have had horse back riding lessons, I have never had that opportunity and don’t know much about horse care. Any suggested books or websites would be appreciated.
My children won the pony in an essay contest and our family had an older horse at our home for a summer.

Why are you getting a wild pony if you aren’t very experienced….. you are asking for trouble someone IS going to get hurt! A wild pony will more than likely be no fun for your kids it will inevitably dull their interest and ruin their confidence…
You should be getting a well trained schoolmaster as a first pony people are giving them away to good homes.
I think you should get some more advice before you make any commitments talk to your kids trainer and some local experienced horse owners. I’m sure they will be only top happy to give you some food for thought and they may even know a pony perfect for you.
If you are going to get a wild pony which I really don’t recommend( I would think twice myself and I’ve been riding 18 years), you need to get a trainer to help you…

You need hands-on training by an experienced person, not books. Books will not teach you what you need to know to handle a wild pony, or even a broken and trained one.
No offense, but if you don’t know much about horse care, and the pony’s owners are only children, why are you getting a “wild” one? This sounds like a recipe for diaster.
Answer by TuckerNo offense but you may want to rethink this, this is very dangerous with out lots of experience. I would go find some barns in your area talk with owners, and find another already trained of at least used to people and grooming.
I personally like John Lyons and just a few tips from Pat Parelli, best of luck and be careful.Answer by Tinkerbella
monty roberts is really great. be careful about a wild pony. not only is it untrained, it has never had human contact. many horses kick and bite. especially with children. i would hate to see someone get hurt. people read misty of chincoteague and have a fantasy in their mind but it isn’t like that at all. please leave the wild pony up to monty roberts
