I have a co-worker who is a HUGE sci-fi guy. He is so into it, he likes to be called “Darth” as a nickname. He often dresses in all black and breathes heavily while walking down the hall ala Darth Vader. He also only refers to the “stock market” as the “spock market.” But, most intriguing, on Fridays, when we say goodbye for the weekend, he tells me to “live long and prosper” while doing the V sign with his hand. I could go on and on, but I’m sure you get the point.

He is a nice guy for sure, but isn’t this workplace behavoir highly illogical and an anathema to all that Spock actually stood for?

Wow. I could never do what he does, but I’d sure love to get laughs out of him … if he actually does his work and isn’t a burden on you. I say enjoy it and keep a distance so you don’t catch whatever he has!

I think for a workplace that is innappropriate. It would also annoy me. I think that even if you said anything to him though that he would not listen. He reminds me of the guy from “Grandma’s Boy” did you see that? LOL

No, that is NOT workplace appropriate behaviour. If anything, he needs to get his “head” checked. Where I work, he would’ve been gone long time ago, on grounds of mental illness. He needs to be given a warning about his behaviour and if he doesn’t shape-up, they should ship his crazy azz right out the door!

It really depends on the confines within your work environment whether is behavior is highly illogical. Would Spock approve, is probably a more relevant question to his behavior.

I think (being a Star Trek fan myself) that Spock would approve, except for the dressing in black and heavy breathing. It seems confusing that the guy would quote Spock’s words and demonstrate the sign that Spock often used but wants to be called “Darth.” That, in itself, isn’t logical.

If the company doesn’t mind that the employees get into other personas while doing their job, then it should be fine. However, this guy should make up his mind and decide to do the Darth Vader fiend or Spock – not intermingling the two – it just doesn’t fit. As Spock would say, “It would be illogical.”

just try to keep conversations with this co-worker to a minimum and then he might notice something is not right and ask you. when he does just tell him that his behavior at work should not continue while he’s on the clock. some people may not like star wars and that he’s pushing it on you, and you think it’s very childish for a grown man to be walking around acting like darth vader while at work.

Ok, so he is different! Is he hurting anyone? I really do not understand why you are making such a big deal about it. Why does he bother you so much. Find something serious to concern yourself with. It is not as though you have to live with him. God bless

As long as his behavior is not hurtful, offensive or demeaning to anyone, I don’t think it is worth discussing. We are all different, and annoying at some point, let’s all learn to tolerate each others’ differences, and move on to more pressing issues.

If he really does not bother anyone, and there are no clients to see him, then there probably no harm in it, as long as he gets his share of the workload done on time. If you do not like it, then you can stay away from him, or tell him to can the heavy breathing thing around you. That is not appropriate, under any circumstances.
Yeh, it is a little childish, and probably not appropriate in a business place. Spock wouldn’t approve either. He was all business at his job.
Or subtle little hints might stear him away from his personna when you are around. When he gives the live long and prosper goodbye, tell him goodbye, see you Monday. You might tell him the heavy breathing could be interpretted as harrassment, and he should be glad you understand that he does not mean it that way, other people might not.. Less subtle would be something like, Darth, that had better be the real you behind me, because if it is you, Stanley, I will be very upset about the harrassment/heavy breathing.
Who knows, maybe the boss is a sci-fi fan too.
