Tim S: trying to get first credit card, declined?
I’m 22 years old and just recently applied for a credit card (the most basic one that chase offered).
I got a letter yesterday saying that my decision was declined because I don’t “have enough accounts open long enough to establish a credit history.”
How am I supposed to establish credit history if I can’t even open my first credit account?

Department store and gas station credit cards are the easiest to get.
Start with one or two of those.
Pay them off every month.
Re-apply to Chase in about 3-4 months.
Answer by NoraCatTry getting a secured credit card instead – you just need a few hundred dollars to put down as a deposit, and that amount becomes your credit limit (you get the money back when you cancel your card, assuming you don’t owe anything on it). If you use it responsibly for a year or so, you’ll have enough of a credit history to qualify for a real credit card.
Shop carefully for these kinds of cards, some of them have a lot of fees that can make them a bad deal.
Answer by ccbuddyStart with a secured credit card to build your credit. Owning one will make it easier for you to apply for a regular credit card in the future. You can also apply for retail stores or gas station cards. Another type of card that’s you can use is a subprime credit card. They are real credit cards with high interest rates (could reach up to 30%) and usually come with low credit limits and extra fees, so use it with caution. You have to start out by getting a Kohl’s card or some other department store credit card. Buy one thing on credit. Pay it off. Buy something else and pay it off. Never spend what you can’t pay off. When you do this a credit card company will give you a card with like 300 or 400 dollars credit to start you off with. Never miss or be late on a payment. It will haunt you forever.
