Anonymous M: What kind of gift would you get a former teacher who was moving away?
So my French teacher last year who loves me as a student is moving to France. She is leaving in a few days, and I need to get her a gift, but do not know what to get. She is not my teacher this year but me and a friend usually go to visit her sometimes, and I’d consider us friends. What do I get her as a going away gift!

If I could afford, I would give her a beautiful and decorative lamp.

See if you can find a local bank that sells European money, or call a travel agency and ask where you can get it.
Buy her a 10-Euro note (cost about $ 12) and tell her to get some stamps over there & send you a letter from France.
I usually give a sheet or two of postage stamps as a going-away present, I write on the card that they can use the stamps until they find out where the PO is in their new town. But US stamps won’t do her any good in France!

A book would be a good gift.
Do not forget to place a small card, with a few witty “goodbye and remember” lines, preferably in French.
A painting would also be a good choice. Nothing extremely fancy though. A portrait of the person or of yourselves by a good artist would be interesting.
Or maybe a short poem in French.
Of course, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT forget the compulsory bouquet de roses. Preferably white one. A box of quality chocolates might also be interesting. Nice wrappings and quality materials are a must. A picture of your class with a few words and signatures from each of her pupils would be a hearty gift for a teacher. You might also try something to remember her the US. One of those photo albums containing representative pictures of important cities in the US. Think about it. I’m sure you’ll find something heartfelt and cute.
