Moonlight177: How old was your baby when you starting using the shopping cart seat?
My son will be 1 at the end of the month. My husband seems to think it is the right time for him to be able to sit in the shopping cart seat. I have still been keeping him in his car seat. It just didn’t even cross my mind to put him directly in the shopping cart yet (mostly because I hope he takes a nap while I shop! LOL) When did you start putting your little one in the cart?

When they could sit up on their own, and got too heavy to drag around in the car seat- between 8 months and a year.
I was hesitant too, but started using it at 10 mos. She loves it! I use a cart cover which is handy not only for germs, but makes it softer and gives her some entertainment (there are plush toys attached).Answer by Landon’s Momma
5 months, when he was able to sit on his own, we use a shopping cart cover tooAnswer by San

We started using them around 11 months. Bring wipes to wipe them down, gross.Answer by mommy to a princess
Wow. My daughters car seat doesn’t come out of the car so I have no choice while shopping. She started going in the shopping cart as soon as she could sit up on her own. 8 or 9 months maybe.
I do admit tho I have little antibacterial wipes and I just wipe the handle of the shopping cart quick before I put her in only because I’v caught her putting her mouth on the bar! Gross I know! So I have to wipe them down now.
Answer by Beefcake The MightyI actually put m little one in there before should could sit up on her own and I put blankets on both sides of her to keep her upright, she loved being able to see evertyhing and feeling like a big girl 🙂Answer by Daniel’s Mommy
My son is just about 7 mo. I am planning on going shopping this weekend and after talking it over with my husband, we’re going to try it out and see how he likes it. He doesn’t enjoy his car seat anymore, and holding him while he squirms gets difficult after an hour or so. We’re hoping he likes it(he is sitting up almost unassisted now) I plan on bringing a couple blankets…one for him to sit on, and one to put around him for support just in case.Answer by julie.winkelman
After they were able to support themselves in a sitting position without falling over. Between 4 and 6 months.Answer by Lucky Mummy
I tried my daughter last week (she’s 8 months old) and she kept trying to chew on the handle so I certainly will be leaving it for a while.Answer by Mom to an eight month old girl!
My daughter is eight months old and I place her in the cart now. I have one of those cushioned, wrap, covers, whatever you may call it.
She plays and looks around at everything!
Answer by Ashley DWe started sitting her in the shopping cart seat as soon as she could sit up on her own – the straps that they have go around their chest, as opposed to on their laps, so they don’t allow them to fall over easily. We have a cover that goes over it, too, but we don’t always have it handy – I keep disinfecting wipes on me so I can wipe down the surfaces.Answer by teri
9 months…we bought a cart cover..he loves it..Answer by Johnny says Happy Holidays!
6 months. He could pretty much sit up on his own and he hated that infant car seat.Answer by Meghan [Caleb’s Mommy]
We started using it at 6 months. By then he was comfortably sitting up by himself and I found he just LOVED looking around. It actually made shopping time much easier since he was so happy:
I do recommend buying a shopping cart cover though! We’ve loved our Eddie Bower one from Target: Easily washable and it keeps them germ free 🙂 We still use it with our 15 month old whether at the grocery store or at a restaurant. The straps help keep him contained as well!Answer by Nyc
my daughter was 4 months old and for the most part could sit by herself after about an hour she would get tired so i use a shopping cart cover that also helped support her. she loved it.Answer by 4th & last, had her last!
I tried with my third child, at around 7 or 8 months, and she hated it. So I either carried her (or my husband did), or she walked (once she was 10 months old), or we push her in the stroller. 🙂Answer by mystic_eye_cda
My first was 4 months, my second was closer to 10 -they sat unassisted at different ages.
Car seats are for cars! They are not safe out of cars.
Although the currently AAP guidelines as that no child should ever be in a shopping cart because they are too tippy.

The American Academy of Pediatrics released a warning about shopping cart injuries, saying that it’s time for parents to take action to make this type of injury less common for children. According to AAP, more than 24,000 children were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for shopping cart injuries in 2005. The majority of these children were under age 5. Many of the injuries were to the head and neck.
In the release, AAP called for shopping carts to be re-designed to lessen the chance of injuries to children, and suggests that until the re-design happens, parents should:
* leave children at home or have another adult come along to watch children at the store
* put children in strollers, baby carriers or wagons instead of shopping carts
* ask older children to walk instead of riding on the cart
* shop online if possible
If you do put a child in a shopping cart, AAP recommends that you be sure the child is appropriately secured by a harness or safety belt. Do not:
* put a baby carrier or infant car seat on top of the shopping cart
* allow a child to stand up in the shopping cart
* allow children to ride in the basket or on the outside of the shopping cart.
He was around 5 mths. He’s very nosy & just wasn’t happy in the carrier anymore so I got a shopping cart cover. He could sit up on his own somewhat & had good head control so I put blankets on each side to give him some extra support & he absolutely loved it. That way he gets to see what’s going on all around him. He’s 9 mths now & just loves all the attention people pay to him. LOLAnswer by JD’s mama
My son is almost 7 months and he can sit in the cart. However, the seat cover we have is crap so until I get a new one it’s back to the carrier. He seemed to enjoy it though, it’s a better view. He’s just getting too heavy to take in and out of the car in his carrier, although if he would still nap while I’m shopping I would probably keep using it.Answer by Emma’s MumMum & 22 Weeks w/
About six months old….I couldn’t imagine carrying my 25 lb baby in a carseat.Answer by Damian’s mommy
my son is 10 months old and we started at 9 months because he is getting to heavy to carry in the car seat and when we go in hubby’s truck we use his convertible one so he sits in the cart or we hold him when he is tired. but he loves siting in the seat. now i sometimes still drag along his car seat when we are in my car if he is sleeping already.Answer by Artie Lange Fan
Between 5 and 6 months.
At first I put in little blankets on each side to keep him snug in it.
At your baby’s age they can definitely sit in it – I can’t believe you are still using a car seat!
Never used any cover or anything like that but the grocery store has Purell wipes at the door I wipe it down quickly in case he decides to chew on the bar, for some reason shopping carts gross me out out of anything.
Answer by MyOpinionOnlyWe started putting our daughter in the shopping cart seat (with a full cover) close to 8 months old. She has been sitting up, supporting herself for some time, and had started pushing up against the harness in the carseat. We also started letting her ride in her stroller sitting up (without the carseat) as well. She LOVES it. I took plenty of pictures for “baby’s first ride as a big girl”. Each baby progresses at their own speed. Good luck.Answer by RockStar!!!
Oh well my sister who is 10 months old sits in the cart seat. If he can sit up he should be able to sit up with out a problem. You can also buy this thing that u put on the seat and it gives the baby something to play with. My sister has one and she likes it. Best of Luck!!!
