Sienna: How to get a start in the fashion industry at a young age?
I’m only 15 but I’m extremely interested in the fashion industry. I know it’s extremely hard to get work in the industry and that it often doesn’t work out for a lot of people.
I don’t want to know how to start a fashion clothing line just yet or anything big like that. I;m just wondering if there are any places that i can intern at or something very small, just to get some more experience in that area. Please and thanks.

Look into the fashion colleges to see what companies have posted/ are searching for potential candidates. You would need to know what area of fashion you’d want to be in first of all. The range is very big, from design, production, marketing, buying, photography, etc. Then you get into categories like shoes, active-wear, ready to wear, couture, kids, etc. However, most companies want either experience, education, or some darn great talent. There is a lot of competition for these jobs and the business is extremely cut-throat. Especially with today’s economy, the competition is fierce. I’ve found that a good place to start is with the manufactures and wholesalers. If you know how the monster fashion industry machine produces and works you’ll have a small leg up on the competition. Try getting a part time job at a wholesaler or manufacturer, just don’t expect it to be pretty, we’re talking warehouses, machinery, plastic, and dust. Or if you have the drive and the funds, start one of those yourself. Just don’t plan on jumping directly into the field you desire most. It normally doesn’t happen that way. Most women your age want to be in the fashion industry for the clothing you wear at that age, I wanted it too, but there are just too many women like us who want the same field and it greatly reduces the chances. Children’s clothing is one of the no-fail industries out of them all. You have to start at the bottom to get to where you want to be. I hope this helps! Good Luck!
PS… Portfolios (photos, samples, sketches, & recommendation letters/ awards) of your work in the area of fashion you want to be in are great to have. It’s your resume to the artistic world!
I also want to be in the fashion industry and i actually took some steps to accomplish my dream, when i told my parents i wanted to be a fashion designer they didn’t think it would be great for me because they didn’t think i would get the chance to be one.But they still support me on my dream and soon they started to spread the word to my relatives.I didn’t want them to know because i didn’t think it was a big deal, but anyways my uncle gave me my first sewing machine and my mom bought be a sketch pad so i sketch and basically sew now almost everyday. My sisters thought it was cool so they let me sew them a pair of shorts and they would wear it around town telling people what i did and now i’m just waiting for a good opportunity to come my way.Its always exciting to think that your gonna own a clothing line someday but you should always go to classes and learn how to sew and sketch !! Good Luck i hope to wear something you design someday
