I would like to start a clothing store with (urban) clothing names such as rocawear, phat farm, ecko, etc. There are many stores in chicago like this I was just wondering how do they get started.

have a location first and then contact all the retails you have in mind, and tell them your plan, basically you have to ask them if you can be one of there distributors

first you need to write a business plan. you’ll need this for both a point of reference, and you will need it during the loans/borrowing process. many banks and other lenders require you to show them your plan so they will feel confident that you know what you are doing and have the ability to pay them back. the plan should include a summary of the business, marketing plan, and among other things, a financial plan. you wil have to find out how much it will cost to open the store and how much it will cost to keep it open.

find out how much it will cost to rent out retail space in your area. how big will it be? how much merchansise will you need to inventory in order to fill up the racks? how much will it cost to renovate the space? how much will it cost to install fixtures?

how big will your staff be? how will you pay them? commission? hourly? benefits?

will you need a computer system to track inventory? to ring up sales?

your business plan should answer all of these questions.

lisencing and permits vary from state to state. you will need to register you business, get a tax id number from the irs, trademark any logos and signage, among many, many other things.

you will also need to find a rep/distributor/showroom of the brands you wish to carry. some labels require you to meet certain criterias before they allow you to carry their brand.

this is just a BRIEF synopsis of how to open a retail store. there is a lot more involved. if you are serious about opening your own business, you should contact the SBA.

i don’t know your financial situation, but if you are like where i was when i first statred out, i would suggest you start saving your money now, and start figuring out where you’re going to get your money from.

but the most important thing you need is determination and perserverance. grind hard, keep your head up and before you know it, you’ll be running your own business.
